Webstart.me is a relatively new home page, new tab, and default search engine page for your browsers that may appear silently, behind your back even though it is possible to download and install this browser extension via official channels. This tool may seem to be innocent and useful, but we have found certain traits exhibited that made us doubt its reliability. Thus, we have labeled this tool as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) but it is also possible that other researchers categorize it as a browser hijacker because of its capability to make changes to your browser settings. Even if this PUP does not mean direct and great danger to your system, it might still expose you to an increased number of third-party ads and questionable third-party content through. Although this featured search page looks like your Metro UI screen with all the quick links to popular pages and functions, we believe that this PUP may not be the best choice if you want to keep your virtual world secure. In fact, we believe that you should remove Webstart.me from your browsers and eliminate all other threats as well.

This PUP is not the first and definitely not the last creation of the team called RCPmedia. If you check their official page at rcpmedia.net, you can clearly see that there are nearly fifty tools available for download, including UpDownTest, VirtualPiano, and PhotoFilters to mention a few. However, you cannot directly download or install this PUP there. First, you need to visit its page and choose the Downloads menu (webstart.me/tools.htm), which will offer you this browser extension and another tool, too. Also, you may find potentially unreliable third-party advertisements on this page, which you should not click on if you plan to keep your PC safe. Yet another official channel for you to install this PUP is to visit its Chrome web store page at chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/webstartme/kknfknopchencmhfckpmgmjcidmnpocd. Unfortunately, there is a good chance that most users who have this tool installed in their browsers, did not even visit these promotional pages. If you are not convinced yet that you need to delete Webstart.me, let us give you one more reason.

We have found that this PUP may also be distributed via freeware bundles. While you can definitely find reliable and authentic software packages containing a few ad-supported programs for developers to be able to provide users with free software, there is a dark side to this deceptive method. Schemers can also use bundling to deliver PUPs and all kinds of malicious programs as well to your system in one go. All you need to do is click on an unreliable third-party ad or a corrupted link and you could drop such a package onto your machine. When installing a malicious bundle, you may not even realize that you are installing this PUP or make changes to your browsers. You need to avoid suspicious torrent, freeware, gaming, and gambling pages, and all others that promote a conspicuous number of third-party contents if you do not wish to download such packages. But right now we suggest that you delete Webstart.me and run a full system malware scan to identify all possible threat sources that need to be eliminated.

This PUP sets itself (webstart.me) as your home page, new tab, and even your default search engine in your main browsers, including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Internet Explorer as well. It looks very similar to your Windows 8 (and higher) Metro UI screen will all the rectangular buttons to preferred and popular sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Gmail. Unfortunately, this tool can also collect information about you and might even share it with third parties, which can lead to targeted advertising. Thus, you may experience more and more third-party ads and redirections to questionable websites via this PUP. It seems that the search results it shows may not be modified. It redirects your queries to a Google search results page. Of course, this can change in the future and you might then be exposed to sponsored content, which could mean exposure to potentially unreliable affiliates. Although this PUP is not directly dangerous, it might still show you questionable content, which is why we suggest that you remove Webstart.me from your computer.

The good news about this PUP is that all you need is remove this extension from your browsers and your headache should be cured. If you wonder how to do this, please follow our instructions below. As you can see, it is really easy to infect your computer with all kinds of potential and malicious threats as well. If you are not confident enough that you can become a more cautious surfer, we advise you to safeguard your system with a trustworthy malware removal like SpyHunter.
