We want to inform you about SocialNewPage, a browser extension that we have categorized as a potentially unwanted program for its questionable behavior and the fact that it does not provide a real service. Therefore, we recommend that you remove this application from your computer as soon as the opportunity arises. This application’s promotional campaign claims that this app will enable you to connect with your friends faster, but all it does is providing you with links to various social media websites. Furthermore, it is set to hijack your browser’s homepage and force you to use an unreliable search engine. To find out more about it, please continue reading.

If you think that SocialNewPage is a legitimate application, then you are mistaken. This browser extension was released by a company called Imali Media Ltd, a notorious software-developing company that specializes in making browser hijackers that are often accompanied by some kind of browser extension, such as the case with SocialNewPage. Also, this program has a clone called MediaNewPage whose name is also very similar, so it is clear that they are related. Nevertheless, we want to make you aware of Snjsearch.com, Search.internetquickaccess.com, Safebrowsesearch.com, and Search.wondrousmoviessearch.com, which are browser hijackers made by Imali Media Ltd as well.

This browser extension is compatible with Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, and they are distributed using a dedicated distribution website called Socialnewpage.com. If you use Chrome, then clicking the download button on this website will redirect you to the Chrome Web Store from which you can download this extension directly to the browser. If you are using Firefox, the website will not redirect you to another site, but initiate the download on Socialnewpage.com. The add-on for Firefox is named SocialNewPage Extension 0.1.9 while for Chrome it is just Social New Page. Now you might think that all Chrome extensions hosted on the Chrome Web Store are legitimate, but that is not the case, and you have to be wary of the type of program you want to install. Another method that might be used to disseminate this browser add-on is software bundling. Indeed, it might get bundled with legitimate software and be put up for download on freeware distributing websites. So you should avoid such websites.

After you install this extension, it will change your browser’s homepage or new tab page (depends on the browser.) Thus, it will force you to use its unreliable search engine Search.socialnewpagesearch.com. We warn you not to trust this search engine because it redirects all search queries to SafeFinder (Search.SafeFinder.com) which then redirects them to a modified Yahoo.com search engine. The problem is that it might subject you to customized search results that may include promotional links that redirect to malicious websites.

It is worth mentioning that its customized Search.socialnewpagesearch.com search engine features a toolbar that includes sport, news, social, email, and shopping-related links that redirect to their respective promoted websites. This is all well and good, but that does not make this application useful. Furthermore, at the bottom of the search box, we find icons of the most popular social media websites that are the cornerstone of SocialNewPage. Also, it features a search bar that shows search results from Facebook.com which is not a bad idea, but logging into Facebook is not that time consuming, so, it is another hit and miss on the part of this extension’s developers.

To sum up, this supposedly harmless browser extension is not all that good. We have classified it as a potentially unwanted program because the extension itself is not malicious, but the browser hijacker it comes bundled with may subject you to unreliable content that can jeopardize your system’s security. In regards to this extension’s other functions, we have to conclude that they are not useful at all because you can make your own custom bookmarks and exclude links you do not need and this program does not provide that. Please use the removal instructions we have included below to get rid of this application for good.
