Searchsio is a tool that should improve your web browsing experience. As you can tell from its name, it is a web search extension that works solely on the Chrome browser. This application is a potentially unwanted program (PUP). These programs are not malicious infections, but it is recommended to remove them from your system if you had no business having them, and they just seemingly popped up out of nowhere. It is easy to remove Searchsio, and when you get rid of it, scan your entire system with a licensed security application to see whether you have more unwanted apps.
Like most PUPs, Searchsio has an official source. There’s this official website at searchsio.com, and there’s also a page for the app at the Chrome Web Store. Of course, most of the users who complain about this application do not get it from official sources. It is a lot more common for such apps to spread through file-sharing websites and various pages that are full of pop-ups and redirects.
If you have recently downloaded a program from a file-sharing website, you should check whether you have multiple unwanted apps installed. The problem is that programs that come from file-sharing sites are often bundled with various other applications, and users tend to install them, no questions asked. However, if you were to take time and go through the installation steps, you would be able to deselect the unwanted applications.
Granted, Searchsio might also come from random pop-ups. If an aggressive pop-up tells you to add the extension to the browser and doesn’t allow you to close the pop-up window, you should be able to close your browser with the Alt+F4 command. Either way, it is always possible to avoid adding unwanted extensions to your browser as long as you are attentive enough.
However, if Searchsio gets added to Chrome, the extension will change several settings immediately. It will change your default search engine to feed.searchscio.com, and all of your search queries will be redirected to a modified Yahoo! Search page. Of course, it doesn’t mean that Yahoo! Search is part of this Searchsio scheme. The creators of this extension merely make use of the popular search engine to make everything look legitimate. However, the search results that you will see through Searchsio will be modified based on the information this app has collected about it.
When Searchsio is added to the Chrome browser, it asks for permission to “read your browsing history.” It means that it can employ tracking cookies to monitor your web browsing habits. After that, the app can modify your search results in a way that results related to your likes and preferences appear at the top of the results page. This way, there is a better chance that you will click those links. If you do that, Searchsio gets paid through the pay-per-click system.
For the most part, you should be redirected to completely harmless websites. So, this kind of practice is more annoying than dangerous. On the other hand, we cannot rule out the possibility that Searchsio could be exploited by a malevolent third-party to promote corrupt content.
All in all, if you didn’t intend to have this extension, reset your browser settings to default to get rid of Searchsio. You should review your web browsing habits if you have multiple unwanted applications installed. While they cannot destroy your system, they could easily expose you to a number of potential malware threats. To be absolutely sure that your system is safe and clean, perform regular PC scans with a powerful antispyware tool of your choice.
