Pdfconverter.pro appears to be a browser hijacker, so if you do encounter it, we would recommend being careful with it. Usually, browser hijackers that provide a search engine might be potentially dangerous because they may show modified search results. It means the gathered results could be injected with third-party advertisements in order to generate advertising revenue from user’s clicks. The bad news is, such content might come from just about anywhere since the browser hijacker’s creators do not list the companies that may show ads and claim they are not responsible for any third-party content. This means there is a possibility some of the ads could even be potentially malicious and because of this, we do not think it to be wise to use Pdfconverter.pro. Surely, there are more reliable search engines to make as your homepage, default search engine, etc. If you think it would be smarter to get rid of this threat as well, we recommend following the deletions instructions located a bit below or scanning the system with a reliable security tool.
Our researchers report Pdfconverter.pro might be distributed with a specific browser extension called MediaTab TV – PdfConverter. At the moment of witting it is available on Chrome Web Store page (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/mediatab-tv-pdfconverter/pgcbamhcnohldmlkbngdagaaabkakfgd). The description there claims the extension is for “converting your documents, beautiful browsing and search experience.” Indeed, the browser hijacker’s search engine could be displayed on a pretty background picture, and below it, you may see buttons allowing to convert PDF or Microsoft Word documents. Naturally, having a nice search engine and features for converting documents might seem useful, but as we said, in the beginning, there is a risk the threat could also provide you with unreliable third-party advertising content.
To be more precise, the fact, Pdfconverter.pro could show third-party advertising content is mentioned on the software’s End User License Agreement document (pdfconverter.pro/eula.html), where it is also said its developers take no responsibility for any consequences that might arise from users interactions with it. In other words, the advertisements could come from anywhere, for example, some might originate from scam web pages, malicious sites containing malware, untrustworthy file-sharing sites offering other browser hijackers, adware, etc. Needless to say, clicking such ads could be dangerous not only to the system but also to your privacy. Thus, if you do not want to risk exposing your computer to potential threats or revealing your sensitive data to unreliable parties accidentally, we recommend removing, Pdfconverter.pro and the extension it came with at once.
If you feel up to the task, you can try to erase Pdfconverter.pro manually. Since the browser hijacker should travel with the earlier mentioned extension, we would recommend deleting its created folders. Then, users should erase specific browser data that the threat might have modified to replace user’s default search engine, homepage, or other browser preferences alike. Of course, if the process looks a bit too complicated you could use a reliable security tool instead. All you would have to do is install it on the computer, set it to perform a full system scan, and wait till it finishes detecting potential threats. Lastly, you should be able to remove the hijacker and all other detections ta the same time by pressing the provided deletion button.
