ESpeedDownload is a recently discovered browser extension for Google Chrome that is supposed to test the speed of your Internet connection. However, after analyzing this application, we have classified it as potentially unwanted, and we recommend that you remove it. We do not consider this program as malicious, but it is useless because it does not do anything relevant that you could benefit from. We believe that it is used to promote a certain search engine and help generate advertising revenue. So if you have already installed this program, then we invite you to read this short description.
While researching this potentially unwanted program, we found that it is currently being distributed on a website called Espeedcheck.com. However, this site features more than one browser extension. It has a total of 11 extensions, and all of them are considered potentially unwanted. All of these extensions come from the same developers and have more to do with online advertising than providing you with a useful function. Nevertheless, this website is becoming increasingly popular because many users want to check their Internet speed. Our analysis has revealed that most visitors come from India, which makes the bulk of all visits with 38 %, followed by the US with 11.6 %, and Indonesia with 5.3 % of all visits.
Apart from the website, this extension is being distributed using malicious installers. We were not able to pin point the exact websites and installers it comes with, but on the whole, it is likely that is these installers are featured on software distributing sites that allow the users to download the installer first which then downloads the desired program. However, most users do not notice that when agreeing to install the software, they also agree to install ESpeedDownload, so make sure always to opt for custom or advanced installation settings and remove unwanted software from the installation process.
You might think that ESpeedDownload is required to run the speed test at Espeedcheck.com, but that is untrue. You can go to that website whenever you like and test your Internet speed to your heart’s content. So what is the purpose of this program? We have found that this application has been configured to replace your browser’s existing homepage with its promoted one. Usually, it is Movix.searchalgo.com, but it can promote other shady search engines as well. Note that this extension is only for Google Chrome, so if you are not using this browser, then rest assured, ESpeedDownload will not get on your computer anytime soon. The extent to which it modifies Chrome is not apparent as it only adds the link to Espeedcheck.com at the top-right of the browser window.
Movix.searchalgo.com is a search engine of unknown origin. We do not know who developed it, but that is not that important. What is important, however, is this search engine’s ability to promote the content of its partners. We believe that this search engine can inject advertisements into the search results and, thus, compromise your PC’s security with malicious websites and malware downloads because we do not know whether all of its content is legitimate. We would also like to mention that Movix.searchalgo.com is a real search engine because it redirects its search queries to Yahoo.com, but that does not mean that Yahoo’s search results are not modified. Indeed, they are, and you might be deceived by this.
So, all in all, ESpeedDownload is not okay. It comes from unknown developers and is promoted as a program that can test your Internet’s speed. However, you do not need this program to use that speed test because it is web-based. In any case, we recommend using the widely popular Speedtest.net instead of Espeedcheck.com since it comes from unknown developers and, thus, can be unreliable. So follow the removal instructions we have included below.
