We want to inform you about DiskPower, an application that we have recently classified as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that you ought to remove for two reasons. Its primary feature to identify and delete duplicate files is highly unreliable because of the way it compares the files. Moreover, it is set to display commercial advertisements as it has been developed by a company that specializes in online advertising. In short, this application offers nothing of value and the sooner you get rid of it, the better.

This program’s promotional slogan says “Optimize your disk now,” which suggests that this application can make your computer’s hard drive work much better. On closer inspection, this application is configured to find and erase duplicate files and free up space on your computer’s hard drive. However, after testing this application, we have come to the conclusion that you should not trust this program to deliver you a reliable service because it is set to identify duplicate files by comparing size of the files and their names, so it leaves a great margin for error and you should not take its scan results at face value. It is likely that this application will erase a file that has the same name and size but is not an actual duplicate.

Nevertheless, DiskPower’s creators try to pass it on as a legitimate tool. It is very basic but appears to have more to offer than it can. For example, its Graphical User Interface (GUI) features multiple tabs such as the Computer Status tab that is set to show you information such as the processor name and frequency of your PC, as well as the amount or RAM on it. The second tab is called Disk Status that shows the total capacity of your PC’s hard drive and free and used space. Note that all of this information is available to you by accessing the appropriate function within Windows. DiskPower also offers you a Settings tab that enables you to select the size of files to be skipped as well as a list of locations to skip. However, it lacks one essential feature, and that is to disable it autostarting on Windows start up. So you are stuck with this program running in the background continuously unless you uninstall it using the instructions provided at the end of this article. However, before we move on to its removal, let us take a look at its origins and dissemination methods.

Our research has revealed that this application has been created by a software developer called SecuriDEX LLC which is also known as WeMonetize. This company develops potentially unwanted programs and it has previously released an application named SecuriDex which was supposed to be a media player, but all it managed to do was promote a tech-support phone number, so it was classified as a potentially unwanted program as well. We are positive that this company will publish more shady software in the near future, and it is unlikely that it will change its ways anytime soon.

DiskPower has a dedicated website at Diskpower.biz which is supposed to host its installer, but the download does not initiate due to some technical issue. Nevertheless, it is also distributed via software bundles featured on websites that host downloads of free software. Furthermore, it seems that this program can be dropped secretly by malicious applications installed on your PC, so we recommend that you scan it for malicious software using an antimalware tool.

In closing, it is clear as day that there is something wrong with DiskPower. Its duplicate detection system is far from being unpolished. We think that it is a result of lazy development and, therefore, it can mistake identically named files for duplicates and remove one of them. Also, the fact that it can display advertisements makes this program unreliable as there is no way to tell whether the promote content is legitimate.
