Desktop Weather Channel is a potentially unwanted program because it might be installed on your computer without your permission. That is to say, it may seem that the program entered your computer uninvited, but it cannot barge into your system unless you allow it to. You simply were not aware of the fact this application was about to be installed on your PC. Luckily, it is not hard to remove Desktop Weather Channel, so if it was not your intention to have the app added to your Chrome browser, you can scroll down to the bottom of this article for the manual removal instructions and use them to remove Desktop Weather Channel for good.

The application is intended for the Chrome browser, so it would not appear on any other browser, but we should not forget other programs that might come with this weather app. It is true that Desktop Weather Channel has an official homepage, and you can access it via desktopweatherchannel.com, but the main homepage is not the central source of the program’s distribution. It is a lot more likely that this extension was added to your browser when you downloaded some freeware app from an unfamiliar website.

If you need to install some application on your computer, you have to be sure that you download it from its official website because downloading from third-party sources could eventually lead to unnecessary freeware installation, too. What’s more, you have to be attentive during the installation process because you might be given the opportunity to avoid installing additional features, but ONLY if you did not skip all the steps considering them default. This is why users often think that Desktop Weather Channel appear out of nowhere: they miss the information about the additional programs that are about to be added to their system.

Do you really need Desktop Weather Channel though? The point is that this program provides you with a service that even your own operating system could offer. Well, perhaps not the operating system itself, but the built-in apps and gadgets that could really provide you with the weather forecast for your region. So adding this application to your browser might be counter-productive because it could slow down your browser and spam you with random commercial ads. After all, according to the application’s privacy policy, Desktop Weather Channel “may allow third parties to serve advertisements and provide analytics services in connection” with their product.

What can we take from this? It means that the program could collect information on your web browsing habits, and then it would be able to display a lot of custom commercial content whenever you browse the web. This is where the security issues may arise. Desktop Weather Channel does not review the third-party content it promotes, so some of the links this program promotes could be embedded there by malevolent third parties.

In the worst-case scenario, it could also lead to a malware infection, but of course, a potentially unwanted program does not aim for that. Right now, the most important thing is that you did not intend to add Desktop Weather Channel to your browser, and so, there is no need to keep it. Get rid of this application and make sure your system is protected from other undesirable programs.
