Vundo is a trojan that shows irritating pop-up advertisements and secretly downloads harmful files onto your PC. Because Vundo can run lots of advertisements, Vundo can severely decrease your system memory and slow down your computer. Vundo spreads through emails with links to insecure websites that exploit security holes of Internet Explorer. Once you click on a link in a Vundo-laced email, Internet Explorer launches a site that secretly installs the trojan into your computer. Vundo can run every time you startup Windows.

How Did You Get Vundo?
Wondering how Vundo ended up on your PC? If you’re infected with Vundo or other badware, perhaps you were using…
- Freeware or shareware: Did you download and install shareware or freeware? These low-cost or free software applications may come bundled with spyware, adware, or programs like Vundo. Sometimes adware is attached to the free software to “pay” developers for the cost of creating the software, and more often spyware is secretly attached to free software to harm your computer and steal your personal and financial information.
- Peer-to-peer software: Do you use a peer-to-peer (P2P) program or other application with a shared network? When you use these applications, you put your system at risk for unknowingly downloading an infected file, including applications like Vundo.
- Questionable websites: Did you visit a website that’s of questionable nature? When you visit malicious sites that are fishy and phishy, badware may be automatically downloaded and installed onto your computer, sometimes including applications like Vundo. I recommend you use Firefox web browser, if you don’t already.
Understanding Vundo
If you’re infected with Vundo, you should know what you’re fighting. I’ll explain some definitions related to Vundo.
Vundo May Be a Trojan
Trojans install themselves secretly onto your computer, most often through your downloading a simple email attachment (often Trojans pose as harmless pictures). Most Trojans are able to gain complete control over your PC after installation. With this control, the Trojan and the hacker behind it may change your system settings, delete important files, steal your passwords, and watch your computer acitivity.
Infection Methods of Vundo and Other Trojans
Most Trojans infect your computer by tricking you into launching an infected file. This poisoned file could disguised as a small file, such as a jpeg or other email attachment, or it might be downloaded via a website or FTP.
- Email: Your PC may be infected with a Trojan when you download infected email attachments, or sometimes even when you simply open an email. Many Trojans exploit security holes in Microsoft Outlook. You may be able to reduce your chances of getting infected by a Trojan by using a spam-blocking software.
- Websites: Your PC may be infected with a Trojan when you visit a rogue site. Many Trojans exploit security holes in Internet Explorer web browser so that by simply visiting a website you may unknowingly download a Trojan.
- Open ports: If your computer runs programs that provide file-sharing functions – such as AOL Instant Messenger (AIM), MSN Messenger, and more – you may open your computer up to vulnerabilities. Using file sharing through these applications may create a network that gives attackers the opportunity to remotely access your computer.

Vundo is a real pain, my computer got infected by an e-mail attachment from a trusted source and now my machine is out of business causing me to lose a lot of time and money for my company! I often wonder why any website that was allowing this kind of code to infect machines everywhere to not be shut down and the owners of said site to be booked in the gray bar hotel?!?!?! I’m also curious as to why my company forks over big money to the anit-virus company and the products never work, we discover that they are useless against many things with situations just like this. I ask you, is it poossible that the anti-virus companies and geeks that are so ugly that no matter how much money they have will never get laid, making and releasing these viruses in an attempt to instill fear in you to make you buy more of their crap?!?!?! How come Obama is launching an investigation into the practices of these criminals and finding a way to put an end to these cyber type Bonnie and Clyde’s???? Usually no one will do nothing about it if the “Officials” in charge are getting paid to not do anything about it. I guess it’s time to move to open source.
Hey everyone, I have a virus called Vund!o – that’s what McAfee calls it – every single time I turn my laptop on I get 3 error messages followed by 3 McAfee alerts, the alerts say it has found a virus and it has been blocked and removed, the error messages say something about DLL files being missing.
McAfee clearly cannot get rid of it, I have tried scanning and nothing comes up.
My laptop is new I got it for christmas and now runs so slowly, it’s driving me insane! Not only that but when I looked up the virus I was told it relays personal information to a 3rd party :/
I am so confused and stupidly didn’t make any recovery DVD’s when I was asked to, so my plan to wipe it all and start over is out the window, I’m really stuck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Thanks.
HELLO I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO REMOVE 2 TRAJANS ONE OF THEM IS A VUNDO AND THE ONTHERE ONE IS A VUNDO 778 I HAVE THE PROGRAM CA SECURITY AND IT PROTECTS MY COMPUTER BUT SINCE THIS TWO TROJANS GOT INTO MY SYSTEM I MY PROGRAM JUST WONT DELETE THEM, I WANT TO KNOW WHAT CAN I DO TO REMOVE THEM MANUALLY, I TRIED STEP BY STEP BUT IT JUST DONT SEAM TO WORK
I tried using Spyhunter 3 and while it found Vundo and even said it git rid of it. It came right back. Any thoughts?
I have used Malware bytes from Malwarebytes.org and it has worked perfectly for me (also if you are going to buy any Symantec program DO NOT it is rubbish)
I am trying out Malwarebytes and its great fun to see the Symantec box continually popping up to tell me that I have a nice Vundo virus, so far I have 45 objects infected. Wish me luck?
I do hope their tiny weenies fall off and shrivel. They have cost this student a lot of time and no sleep, I have kids and its pretty uncool to make my kids suffer because I cant get my work done.
Really annoys me. I hope these little programmers parents find out what kind of children they created, they should be ashamed.
Malwarebytes.org Anti-Malware is the best thing I’ve found to remove this pest. I’ve found most AV programs are detecting parts of it and quarantining most of the other things its downloading, but you have to get rid of every piece of ths insidious virus. Anti-Malware has been working for me for a long time now.
To the guy(s) who developed Vundo, I hope women laugh at your weenies when they see how small they are.
I’ve been fighting with vundo for a couple days now…started with superanitspyware…Malwarebytes…ccleaner….Spybot search and destroy (although with Spybot, it manages to find a way to shut it down)…I am currently running an avast boot scan after the latest definitions download to see if it is of any assistance…once done with that, i’m not sure where i will go….oh, i’ve also run the vundo fix (to no avail), combofix (also to no avail) and ran hijackthis…it’s still hanging on….any other suggestions?
