Bookmarks Button may look like a reliable browser extension, but it comes from an unknown source which makes it unreliable. Furthermore, it offers its users a rather unnecessary, useless function which is a bookmarks bar, never mind that Google Chrome (the only compatible browser) has its own bookmarks bar. Therefore, we have classified this extension as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and recommend that you remove it from your browser because this application is next to useless. And another thing, we have received information that this program can collect information about you which is used for unknown purposes. To find out more about this shady extension, please read this whole article.

As far as this program’s origins are concerned, there is no information on where it came from. It has a dedicated website at http://bookmarksbtn.com, but it contains no information about this program’s origins. Furthermore, it has none of the required legal documents such as the EULA or Privacy Policy. You can get this application from this website or from the Chrome Web Store. The store claims that this application has close to 100 users which is not much, thankfully. Nevertheless, the user base is growing by the day because more and more people get it on their computers by accident. Indeed, this is due to the fact that this application comes bundled with third-party software and the bundled installers have been set to install this extension on your PC by stealth. The installers may or may not disclose information about the presence of Bookmarks Button and install it without asking you. Therefore, you should opt for advanced/custom installation settings and deselect its installation.

When installing Bookmarks Button, a dialog box appears that informs you that this extension will read and change all your data on the websites you visit, display notifications, and manage your apps, extensions, and themes. However, it does not say that it is capable of collecting information about you. We believe that this application can collect non-personally identifiable information only. This information should include things such as your IP address, location, browser version, operating system type and version, and so on. However, the purpose of collecting it is not known, perhaps it is used for improving this program, but there is nothing to improve. Officially, this application offers its users a bookmarks bar, but we find this odd because Chrome already has a built-in bookmarks bar that you can enable at will you can activate this program’s bookmarks bar by clicking its icon located at the top-right of Chrome’s window. Therefore, we find this application questionable and, above all, totally useless.

Bookmarks Button is by no means a malicious application, but our analysis has shown that it is rather questionable. We can give this app the benefit of the doubt, but the fact of the matter is that it is similar to Your Mini Truetest Extension which means that both of them might have come from the same shady developers. The bottom line is that it offers a useless service, so we suggest that you remove it.  If you do not know to do that, then please see the guide presented below. Finally, we advise caution when downloading software from unknown sources because software from freeware websites is often bundled with potentially unwanted programs, adware, and browser hijackers.
