We have recently come across an application called NetSpeed which is supposed to be a tool for optimizing connection packets. However, after testing this application, we classified it as a potentially unwanted program and suggest that you remove it if you happen to have it installed on your computer. We are unsure about this application’s purpose, but it is clear that its official features are non-existent. In any case, this application is not malicious, so it will not jeopardize your computer’s security. Still, we suggest that you read this whole article as it contains the most important information currently available about it.

We would like to begin with this program’s functionality first and then move on to its distribution channels and removal. If you accidentally or willingly install this software, then you will occasionally be presented with its Graphical User Interface that is set to appear at the lower-right side of your computer’s screen. The interface features the amount of allegedly optimized connection packets over a period of 24 hours. However, we find this counter to be fake, so it does not eliminate packet loss. We are of the opinion that its interface’s purpose is to give you the impression that it does something useful, and you cannot prove or disprove that this function works. In short, all of this packet optimization nonsense is just for show. However, NetSpeed’s real objectives remain a mystery because it does not appear to do anything. Testing has shown that it does not connect to any servers to receive instructions. Hence, we have not seen it rendering commercial advertisements or sending collected non-personally identifiable information.

Now lets delve into NetSpeed’s technical details. Research has shown that upon installation it drops NetSpeed.exe, NetSpeed.exe.config, NetSpeedUpdater.exe, msvcp100.dll, msvcr100.dll, unins000.dat, and unins000.exe files to either %PROGRAMFILES%\NetSpeed if you use a 32-bit version of Windows or %PROGRAMFILES(x86)%\NetSpeed if you use a 64-bit version. Testing has shown that it does not index the uninstaller in Control Panel, so you can either run it from one of the locations mentioned above or delete the files manually. It does not create registry keys, so you will not have to clean up Windows Registry when you uninstall it.

As far as this program’s distribution methods are concerned, we have found that it does not have a dedicated distribution website. Therefore, the only way this application can be distributed is on third-party freeware distributing sites either as a standalone application or as part of a software bundle. Our research has revealed that NetSpeed is bundled with malicious installers set to drop its files onto your computer without your consent, so if you got it on your PC, then the chances are that you got it unintentionally by installing a software bundle from an unreliable software hosting site. Some installers might allow you to deselect NetSpeed’s installation, but you might have to opt for advanced or custom installation settings to do this. This program has not been digitally signed by a software developer, so its origins are unknown.

There is absolutely no reason to keep this application because its official feature does not work and there is no telling what its real purpose is. Our research has shown that it is distributed in a dishonest manner, so if you got it unintentionally, then you might want to remove it. However, it does not have an uninstaller in Control Panel, so you have to run the uninstaller from its directory or delete the files manually. Feel free to make use of the removal guide provided at the bottom of this description.
