Our researchers have recently come across a program misleadingly titled DigitalCleaner. It is not a registry nor a disk cleaner, it does not clean anything. It is, in fact, an adware-type program that that, apart from displaying ads, does absolutely nothing. We think that it would be in the best interest of every user to remove this useless application not for the sake of it being useless, but also because the commercial content it promotes paired with information collection makes DigitalCleaner unreliable, and indeed, a potentially security threat.

DigitalCleaner has been released by a software developer, called JustPlugIt. The company specializes in providing their clients with a platform for displaying commercial content. Their browser extension platform known as the JustPlugIt engine is compatible with Internet Explorer, Chrome, and Firefox. The company’s unique business model allows its clients to create their own adware programs. The clients lay down their expectations and specifications and the company does all the work. The JustPlugIt platform gives clients the means to manage and make certain changes to the advertisements, and it provides the ability to analyze data, and make changes to advertising strategies.

However, since the advertisers who use DigitalCleaner remain in the shadows, it is hard to believe that whatever they are trying to sell you is really worth buying. Adware programs are bound to attract unreliable and even reckless advertisers who promote misleading advertisements. The program can display ads in various forms, including but not limited to coupons, banners, pop-ups, and in-texts. The ads will not improve your browsing or online shopping experience, because most of them have little to do with online retailers. For the most part, this program is used to generate web traffic to certain websites and make money. But in some extreme cases your computer might become infected with browser hijackers, adware, fake system utilities, and so on

The Privacy Policy found at Justplug.it states that the company and probably its products, such as DigitalCleaner do not collect personal information unless it is provided voluntarily. Nevertheless, it is also stated that non-personal information, such as your IP address, domain names, referring website addresses, and some online browsing activity. The information is collected to deliver targeted ads. In our opinion this is only beneficial to the advertisers. Of course, many users would think that showing them relevant content is a good thing, but since the ads are potentially unreliable the only solution is to remove DigitalCleaner.

All in all, DigitalCleaner is nothing more than just another JustPlugIt adware program that displays annoying and above all unreliable commercial content. We fear that some of the ads may contain links to malicious software downloads, since we have observed such cases in the past. Therefore, we recommend that you take action against this little invader. We recommend that you remove DigitalCleaner. We also suggest getting an antimalware scanner that would protect your PC from applications like this in the future.
