How Did You Get XP Deluxe Protector?
Wondering how XP Deluxe Protector ended up on your PC? If you’re infected with XP Deluxe Protector or other badware, perhaps you were using…
- Freeware or shareware: Did you download and install shareware or freeware? These low-cost or free software applications may come bundled with spyware, adware, or programs like XP Deluxe Protector. Sometimes adware is attached to the free software to “pay” developers for the cost of creating the software, and more often spyware is secretly attached to free software to harm your computer and steal your personal and financial information.
- Peer-to-peer software: Do you use a peer-to-peer (P2P) program or other application with a shared network? When you use these applications, you put your system at risk for unknowingly downloading an infected file, including applications like XP Deluxe Protector.
- Questionable websites: Did you visit a website that’s of questionable nature? When you visit malicious sites that are fishy and phishy, badware may be automatically downloaded and installed onto your computer, sometimes including applications like XP Deluxe Protector. I recommend you use Firefox web browser, if you don’t already.
Understanding XP Deluxe Protector
If you’re infected with XP Deluxe Protector, you should know what you’re fighting. I’ll explain some definitions related to XP Deluxe Protector.
XP Deluxe Protector May Be Rogue Anti-Spyware
Rogue anti-spyware refers to anti-spyware/antivirus software of questionable value. Rogue anti-spyware may not be proven to protect your computer from spyware, may popup fake alerts or create many false positives about your PC being infected, or may use scare tactics to try to get you to purchase the application. Rogue anti-spyware software may be installed by a Trojan, come bundled with other software, or install itself through web browser security holes. While it is fairly rare, some rogue anti-spyware is created and distributed by known spyware or adware companies, and the rogue anti-spyware may install spyware or adware itself.
Often when you’re infected with rogue anti-spyware like XP Deluxe Protector, you’ll see a false popup security alert like this:

Rogue Anti-Spyware Tactics
Typically, rogue anti-spyware such as XP Deluxe Protector has one or more of the qualities listed below, which is why rogue anti-spyware is considered anti-spyware software of questionable value.
- False positives/fake alerts: Rogue anti-spyware may produce a large number of false positives or use fake alerts, noting that your computer is infected with spyware parasites or other threats that do not really exist.
- Copycat looks: Rogue anti-spyware may copy the look and feel of other legitimate or rogue anti-spyware applications. Often, rogue anti-spyware applications may appear as close clones of other rogue anti-spyware software.
- High pressure marketing: Rogue anti-spyware may use scare tactics or other aggressive advertising and marketing tactics to try to trick you into buying the rogue anti-spyware application. Often, rogue anti-spyware may produce false positives and fake alerts about your computer being infected.
- Poor detection/scan reporting: Rogue anti-spyware may produce poor reports when it scans your PC. For example, rogue anti-spyware may say your computer is infected 11 parasites, but not specify which spyware parasites or what type of parasites. Rogue anti-spyware may also report that your PC is infected with SafeAndClean, but not tell you which related files, DLLS, etc. were found on your computer.
- Weak scanning/detection: Rogue anti-spyware may not only poorly report on computer infection, but rogue antispyware may also poorly scan your PC. Rogue anti-spyware may skip over important folders and files of your computer that should be scanned to detect spyware.
Did XP Deluxe Protector use these tactics to trick you into buying XP Deluxe Protector?

I got it out using zone alarm
I disabled XPDeluxe.exe using msconfig.exe and the rebooted.
Do this first.
My Norton antivirus isn’t detecting it. I tried to delete the file when I searched for it but it says access denied or cannot read source
It keeps saying I get delete it because my access is denied?? Help!!!

Re: to Angie — i had that problem too. you need to end all the processes before you can delete everything…
follow the instructions under the “how to delete” section.
I got this friggin virus on my work laptop tonight and after rebooting twice, the machine is SO SLOW it is almost dead. I am on my home desktop now just to research how to remove it. On my laptop, it is so slow I can’t even access the CONTROL PANEL or RUN to attempt to remove the program etc. I need help? I have tried, Ctl + Alt+ Delete to no avail, Ctr+ Shift + Esc for the Task Manger to no avail – it just won’t respond? I have been at it for 1.5 hrs now … SUGGESTIONS? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WAS INFECTED WITH THE DELUXE XP PROTECTOR EVEN THOUGH I HAVE Symantec Norton‘S HOMEWORKS. IT LET IT SLIP RIGHT THROUGH. I WENT TO Malware bytes AND DOWNLOADED THE PROGRAM – AND IT STOPPED THE POP UPS AND DELETED THE TASKBAR ICONS. BUT – MY COMPUTER IS SLUGGISH NOW AND RUNNING LOW ON VIRTUAL MEMORY. I HAVE ALSO LOST THE MEDIA SOUND DRIVERS. AND I AM BEING TOLD I NEED TO UPGRADE MY FLASH PLAYER TO VIEW CERTAIN ITEMS IN FACEBOOK’S FARMTOWN – WHICH IS WHERE, BY THE WAY, I PICKED UP THIS TROJAN – BY ALLOWING THE PHOTO UPLOADER INTO MY SYSTEM. BEWARE – AND Norton SUCKS.
THIS SITE HELP ALOT. THANKS
Well, I guess that website was, in fact, questionable….
I was able to boot up in safe mode, do a system restore to bring my computer back to a pre-infection state, then run Virus scans (Malware bytes was my main defense, plus AVG free — it got on my system with AVG Free up and running) until I had confidence in the system again.
The dead giveaway was that XPDP popped up a message saying my computer was receiving transmissions from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx when my network cable was physically disconnected from the box and six inches separated…
When I was getting infected, in I.E. I started seeing dialogs “Do you really want to navigate away from this site”. I don’t know if they are related.
Thanks !!! this page helped me a lot, I am still no sure how could I get this infection, but I believe someone sent me an infected mail. Thank you
Excellent instructions. Thank you so much. This has been the most aggravating problem I have ever had with my computer. These guys should be behind bars.
Norton is fired. It didn’t catch this. System was s-l-o-w. Booted in safe w/ networking. Downloaded Malwarebytes – got rid of it.
I bought spy ware doctor and ran scan, ran full scan, ran full scan in safe mode and still can get rid of this. What the heck am I doing wrong?
XP deluxe protector lives mostly in the internet explorer.
My version of it has the new upgrades, where;
It erases your restore points,
Jams all spyware scanners from opening,
Plays music when you turn on !
Messes up your whole registry.
I think this new version will be the next big thing in aggravating spyware, lookout.
I have attempted to get rid of it, but my computer is unresponsive. I clikc start and the menu will come up as if it is working but then when I click search it just sits there. The mouse doesn’t even appear to be thinking. I have a delete option, but nothing happens when I delete it from the desktop, and everytime I have to restart my computer by just powering off it is back when I turn it back on. Is there anything I can do to make my computer respond to what I am telling it to do? Not just go through them motions…but actually respond?
i cannot find the dll code to delete it, i do not understand how to find it can anyone help?
I tried opening my task manager,a nd it wouldn’t work. Friggin great.
this works great.
thanks
I got it out with Malware anti-malware
I followed the steps and got the XP Deluxe out of my computer. thanks!
Removed most of it but hotmail will not open with IE. Firefox works fine and lets me login to hotmail. What also doesnt work is Microsoft Works. When trying to open a document it just flashes then disappears. I used Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes, Registry Mechanic, AVG and I still cant get IE to work. I tried to remove it and install a newer version but it wont let me install it. Oh and whatever I can delete the recycle bin to permanently delete it. Sucks.
Correction: ..I cant open the recycle bin to permanently delete the items.
ok so it took me writing this complaint in order to get my laptop back in order. Now the recycle bin can be opened. I am now able to download IE 8 and Microsoft Works seems to be ok. One day and a half of no life but trying to fix this laptop. Thanks.
was easy to remove stopped the processes removed the exe and Spybot S&d cleaned up IE and the registry keys
Spybot S&d teatimer prevented the whole system from beeing compomised. else it would of been so deeply imbedded i would of just restored the clonezilla image
