Setli is promoted as an application that will allow you to access censored websites and protect your privacy. It modifies your system’s DNS settings to do that. However, we have found that it can also show ads and, in fact, showing ads is probably its primary objective. Therefore, we have classified this program as adware which means that it is highly unreliable and you ought to remove it. This program does not state that it shows ads explicitly, but this can be seen from its legal documents. Also, the ads it can show while you browse the web are potentially unreliable because there is no telling where they come from.
We have found that Setli used to have a dedicated distribution website at Setli.com, but this site has been down for some time now, and we do not think that it will come back online again. Thus, it is possible that this program is no longer distributed at all. Nevertheless, it might still come bundled with other software and put up for download on freeware hosting websites. While installing other software, you may be offered to install Setli. Also, its installation can be checked by default, you might have to opt for advanced or custom installation settings to deselect it.
If you get this program on your PC accidentally, then it will change your DNS settings and show commercial advertisements while you browse the web. It was set to change the DNS to 18.104.22.168 and 22.214.171.124. Its EULA states “Please note that our Services are offered free of charge. You understand that in order to help maintain our Service free of charge, we may display advertisements through our Services (the Service is ad-supported).” So you may see ads while you browse the web and there is no telling whether the ads are safe to click. Also, they can be quite annoying and intrusive. In the worst case scenario, the ads can redirect you to scam websites or infect your PC will malware. Therefore, we advise against using this program.
Testing has shown that this program will create a scheduled task to run on each time you boot up your computer. It creates tasks in %WINDIR%\Tasks and %WINDIR%\System32\Tasks the task. The tested version created ^bVHLqThOf4ov\.job$ and ^bVHLqThOf4ov$ respectively in the locations above "bVHLqThOf4ov" is not a randomly generated name but it can change with each new version of Setli. Also, testing has shown that it will create four registry keys that they have included below.
These registry keys are vital to running this application, but you need not delete them manually because running the uninstaller in Control Panel is enough to get rid of it for good. However, you will have to change the DNS settings manually.
While Setli can change your DNS settings, its real purpose is to show you commercial advertisements while you browse the web and those ads can be unsafe. Also, if you got it accidentally, then you might want to get rid of it. Please follow the instructions on how to remove it and restore your DNS settings.
