Poonama is a potentially unwanted program (PUP) that functions as the Chrome browser extension. It means that users who use other browsers may not notice the application at all, but that does not mean this app or anything associated with it cannot enter your system. Of course, a PUP is not a ransomware infection, and it cannot steal your money, but such an application could still be associated with certain security issues one should not tolerate. So if you did not plan to install this program on your computer, and it is still there, perhaps it is about time to remove Poonama.

This application has an official website, and it is possible to visit it via poonama.com. It looks sleek and user-friendly, although we do not get much information from it. It only says that with the app you can “turn your start page into a personal dashboard,” and then you see the Add to Chrome button. If that were not enough, the application also has a page at the Chrome Web Store. So it is clear that it does not try to hide or slither into your system undetected. The description at the Chrome Web Store says the following:

Poonama Brings you Really cool new tab Designs. You are about to experience search experience and amazing backgrounds. Poonama Bring Creative ways to change your Your web experience to Amazing and looks good.

This description looks rather odd, and there are stark problems with their English. For some users it would be enough to decide against installing the application, but what if it comes bundled with freeware? Our researchers suggest that users may accidentally install Poonama on their computers after clicking random pop-up ads on unfamiliar websites. Although currently this application affects users in the Philippines, it does not mean it cannot spread further. You need to be ready to contain and delete the application, especially if it arrives uninvited.

When Poonama is added to your browser, it changes your default homepage and new tab settings. It also affects your search engine settings, as the app uses the plusnetwork.com engine to display search results. Although it might seem that the app and everything associated with it should be part of some genuine service, the moment it redirects you to plusnetwork.com, the Chrome browser indicates the site as malicious, and automatically blocks it. This fact alone should convince you that there is nothing useful about Poonama, and it is time to remove it.

Luckily, the app does not display third-party ads, but with the extension added to your browser, it does have “access to your Personal information,” although it is used to perform various services. Now whether it is an intrusion of privacy or not, it is up to you to decide, but we would strongly recommend deleting Poonama from your system as soon as possible.

You can get rid of this application manually through the browser’s settings or through the Program Files directories. We will show you how to apply the latter method, although after manual removal you should also scan your PC with the SpyHunter free scanner. It is necessary to check whether all of the unwanted files have been taken care of, and whether your system is absolutely safe.
