Navsmart.info is a newly discovered browser hijacker designed to replace your web browser’s homepage. We recommend that you remove it from your computer as soon as you can, not only because of the simple fact that it replaces your browser’s settings without authorization, but also displays numerous ads on its main page and includes promotional links in the search results. In short, its promoted links come from unknown advertisers, and we have reason to believe that it can compromise your computer’s security. To learn more about this infection, read this whole article as it contains the most relevant information currently available.

It is important to note that any website that does not feature legal information such as the EULA, Privacy Policy is suspicious by default and Navsmart.info fits this classification. Therefore, we do not know where it comes from or which company it belongs to. All we have managed to find was that its IP address is 107.180.34.195, and that the location of this IP is Scottsdale, Arizona, United States. However, this does not mean that this hijacker’s developers are also based in the US. In any case, it is next to impossible to hold them to account for the creation of malware.

Our research has revealed that this infection is getting popular, and it is spreading like a "virus". According to our research, the bulk of its user base comes from Indonesia with 42 % percent of all visits. So we assume that it is not destined for the Americas or Europe or the Middle East for that matter. Southeast Asia is where this hijacker is distributed. Nevertheless, it is an English language search engine, so it has been internationalized to maximize the profits that it has the potential to bring.

Currently, we do not know how Navsmart.info is disseminated, but we think that it might come bundled with malicious software installers that install it secretly. Also, its download may be promoted by adware-type applications that display pop-up ads, coupons, and banners. Note that at this point it is only an assumption, but we want to state that these are the most probable dissemination methods. Also, we are nearly positive that it comes without a browser extension, but is injected directly by software that interacts with the browser.

Without exception, all browser hijackers aim to hijack your browser to subject you to ads and generate advertising revenue when you click them. Therefore, it is compatible with the three major web browsers that include Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome. Note that Edge is excluded because this particular web browser is designed to be incompatible with these kinds of hijackers. This is just as well because Navsmart.info is set to feature advertisements on its main page. We have found that the ads can be region specific, but some of them are not what leads us to believe that they come from several different sources. In any case, we find its ads unreliable because they redirect not only to legitimate websites such as Ikea.com and Amazon.com but to some shady online gaming websites that vary on the region you are in. Thus, we do not think that it is wise to click them because there is no way of knowing what will happen when you do.

Another important aspect we must mention about this hijacker is that it is set to hijack your browser’s shortcut target which means that if you change the homepage via the browser’s settings, the hijacker will override your change the next time you launch the web browser.
