There are more rogue security apps around than real ones, and the fakes look as good as that Folex you saw on Canal Street. WiniFighter Online Scanner is one of the latest fakes, and it looks as good as it is useless.

Like other scareware, Advanced Virus Protection uses false positives, faux warnings, and fake system alerts to trick you into wasting money on Advanced Virus Protection. Advanced Virus Protection may have snuck onto your machine through a Trojan. Once in, Advanced Virus Protection pretends to scan you system for threats and tells you you’re infected with non-existent badware. Don’t believe Advanced Virus Protection? You’re a smart cookie, but Advanced Virus Protection will keep trying to convince you with Advanced Virus Protection popups and system alerts swearing you need to buy Advanced Virus Protection to remove these imaginary threats. Advanced Virus Protection may also redirect your browser, block your real security software, and hijack your desktop with warnings reading “Your computer has been shut down to prevent damage” or “System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction.”

If you gave into the pressure and paid for Advanced Virus Protection, call your credit card company to block the charge. You might want to get a new credit card to prevent further Advanced Virus Protection charges.
